amid new signs of urgency from both campaigns. case in point, this afternoon's gallup poll showing the president leading mitt romney 49% to 46% among registered voters. among likely voters it's romney up by two leading the president 49% to 47%. folks, this is a tight race as both candidates are keenly aware. romney began in iowa, one of the states that could prove crucial to his hopes for a path to 270 electoral votes. and he was introduced by his son, josh, who had an interesting take on romney's debate preparation. >> we'd say the same lie over and over and my dad learned then not to believe it. so while we didn't go to any of the formal debate preparation, we did the real hard stuff. as a father, he learned how to debate an obstinate child. >> kicking it off by suggesting the president is an obstinate child. that's great, mr. romney. what do you have for sale? >> i am going to put a cap on regulation and any new major regulation will have to be approved by congress. i'm not letting the politicians off the hook. >> absolutely, h

both fail a little bit on the do you have a lot in common with me? because whether it's obama at 85% or romney at 93%, most people don't think they have a loot in common with either of these guys. >> no. but when you ask whether they have anything in common with them or a little bit in common with them, the numbers are starker. 74% say no to romney and 60% no to obama and obama i might add doesn't carry a wallet and drive a car. of course they don't. mitt romney is a civilian. he's unemployed. >> i get it, i get it. >> richard, how are you? >> fantastic. >> really interesting in the poll. who would win in a fist fight. the much younger and fitter obama wins there in a landslide. >> looks pretty fit. >> some serious things in the poll. do you know anyone who wouldn't vote for romney solely because he's mormon? 13%. do you know anyone who wouldn't vote for obama solely because he's black. 26%. that's a rather huge number. that's the black tax we have talked about on this show. i want to talk to you about who would be a better role model for your daught

both candidates rb there today, mitt romney will be there five of the next days and here's what reince priebus told me yesterday. >> as far as if you can win without ohio, i think you can. obviously, we're doing well out west in colorado and nevada. >> fact of the matter is, you talk to almost any republican analyst and they say ohio is critical to their success, and they wouldn't be putting their candidate there four out of the next five days in this home stretch if they didn't think they had a chance. do you think the republicans smell blood in ohio, congresswoman? >> well, no republican has actually won the presidency in modern history without ohio, so it's natural that they would be here, but more importantly, they're here because barack obama is winning ohio and ohio intends to send him back to the white house. most importantly, here in cleveland and across northern ohio, because he saved the auto industry. and one of eight jobs in ohio relates to that critical industry, which by the way, has had the highest level of sales since february of 2008 last month. so -- >> let me ask you

both sides said it. now there is an argument over what the facts are. when we talk about bipartisanship, how do you reach compromise? >> it's a fund mental problem for sure. also a problem when you have politicians who, frankly, have taken centrist positions, lot of positions. if you're going out there as mitt romney did and say, i am the bipartisan healer. i can find compromise, you cannot. you have to talk, communicate in ways that suggest you will do that. it's not enough to say, i'm strong, i'm a leader. you have to be reasonable in that debate. for him to say when the numbers come down they are outrageous. if the numbers are high, that's cool. that leaves you no room to find middle ground. you're poisoning the well for the next time you're in government and in office. that's the danger we have here. it's all short-term. everything we have seen especially from the romney campaign is about the group of people he's with at that time. he's a moderate guy in a debate talking to other people. the next day or with donors it's whatever you need. nos prague

the president's problem was he didn't come with a strong narrative frame, both for defending his own accomplishments and own record, give us an idea of where we're going in the next term and holding mitt romney accountable for having 87 positions on every issue. yes, it gets repetitive but if you continue to frame the issue, you know, in a more elegant way, which we know the president's capable of, you can remind the audience over and over because mitt romney has flip-flopped over and over. so, i hope we see not only -- and the president can remain polite. i just hope we see a more aggressive defense and a better frame, a better narrative about who he is, what he's done and where we're going as a country. >> let's start with the negative. let's play defense here. what about going after this 47%, when romney was being taped, not on national television, but when he thought he wasn't on national television, when he basically dismissed half the country for being slackers, moochers, whatever, loafers. when he did that, that wasn't something he was saying by accident. that is something, se
